Wating Shed At Rawpuichhip

This shed stands at the very heart of Rawpuichhip, one of the tiny villages of Mizoram. From the writings there, the shed was constructed under DRDA, Mamit District funds. It seems it is built for the villagers, but from the look on the picture it is obvious that people seldomly utilized it.

The Unsecure Place

Having guard or security personnel does not depend on who you are. Really, when you involved in some unsecure atmosphere.. you got to have a person who guard your steps! It don’t matter if you wore a suit or a half pant!! The fact of the matter is what you are doing, who you work for and, most of all, where you are…

This is the first, err.. the last time I got security in front and back of me! Though I feel more secure without them, I am not in a position to say a thing or two. They just came by.. not allowing me to move in front or behind them. I just have to stay in between the uniformed men!!

A Day With Elvis

You would probably think of the great Elvis. The ‘Elvis’ who instantly appears in your mind would certainly be the first king of rock and roll. But as the saying goes, don’t judge the book by it’s cover only. The ‘Elvis’, whom I spent a day with was not a rock star and will never be. He was a leader of Brus who now lived in Transit Camps at Tripura. They called themselves ‘displaced people’. They were originally came from Mizoram.

I don’t know why they were here (or there) because they said they were displaced by Mizo people and fled for their survival though the Mizo claimed they regard themselves under privileged and unwanted. Oh no! This is not my point.

I am fortunate enough to spent a day with the Bru leader Elvis Chhokry last September. We had a good meeting and have a good – day long – talk with each other. We do not have a particular subject to discuss so that I also have to say whatever I wanted under a very free circumstance. I will not mention every little bit of our talk, but from that on, I discovered some of the Brus there were not merely a Bru who wore hrenpereng (i don’t know what hrenpereng means in english). The Elvis with me was more than that. Since he was a Post-Graduate fellow [he hold 5th position in NEHU - MA (Publica Administration) in 2003!] he was bright. He always had a thing or two to say about averything I’ve started.

What I want to share my readers from the day I’ve spent with Elvis is – I have envisaged there is a possibility that some day, from the 40 members of Mizoram Legislative Assembly, one would be Bru. But my dear reader, it was only ‘may be’, just may be. But i think, there is a possibility; further, i think the possibility is very high.

Our Future Is Brighter

It was a year when Mizoram team won the prestigious Subroto Cup for U-17 and U-14 Championship respectively in style. It was a year when we won U-19 National Championship in our home. It was a year when we watch for the first time from ESPN, a Mizo footballer playing football. It also was a year when a Mizo Trio done India proud by becoming a major role player in their own positions when the Tata Football Academy won Ian Rush Trophy, the most highly rated Junior football tournament in Europe in Wales. Because of all these, we may called the year 2003 as a blessed year for Mizoram football. There is no calendar year which show many achievements like last year. And this year, our future is brighter. Three of the four Mizo football players who were in Tata Football Academy were to be graduated this summer and will join major Indian football clubs, and almost twenty of our footballer were called for a trial in the Tata Football Academy this February.
The Tata Football Academy (TFA) under “Out of small wonders we make great stars” slogan graduated hundreds of Indian football stars. All the TFA graduates joined major football clubs in the country and no TFA graduate was left out from joining major clubs but can join whether a club owned by private sector or department of their choice.
The first Mizo football graduate was Malsawmtluanga who now play his club football for the best Indian football club – East Bengal. There will be three graduates this year – Vanlalrova, Malsawma and Jerry, who by their own, make their name famous by winning the Milk Cup and making dazzling perfomance in the National club tournaments.
Our correspondent in Kolasib met Vanlalrova, who was in his Christmas vacation last year. Vanlalrova joined the (Tata Football) Academy back in 4th April, 2000. He was a striker, he scored two vital goals for TFA when they beat Tranmere Rovers (Eng) in Milk Cup in Ireland (Jul. 03) and against Bangladesh in JRD Tata Cup (Sept. 03). He was recognised by the Academy when he scored 9 goals for Mizoram in the Subroto Cup,1999, the highest junior football tournament in the country to become the top scorer in the tournament though Mizoram can only managed Semifinals. Anyway, that was the starting point for his carrier.
His father Ramthara always encouraged him to play football. He never make faul comments againts his son playing football but fulfil his son’s demand whether it is a football boot or a jersy. His mother V.L. Siami also helps him a lot. When asked about his son now soon to be played club football a burden for their family she shakes her head, and said, “No, actually when he was in the Academy he not only have money for himself from his monthly allowances and Travelling allowances but also can spare for his brother and sister,”. She continued, “Even this year, he bought shoe for his brother and a blouse for his sister. He never was a burden for our family,” she said proudly.
Diego Maradona, who took the world by his dazzling dribble and uncanny knack of scoring goals in the late 80’s was Vanlalrova’s favourite football player of all time. Beckham, the most famous footballer these days was his favourite footballer among these day’s footballer. Vanlalrova always don jersy no. 13. When asked about why he wore the said jersy number even though all the nation recognised thirteen as unlucky number. He said, “When I played my first competitive football in the local (Kolasib) tournament I wore jersy no. 13 and I scored exactly thirteen goals and become the top scorer. From that on, I really favor thirteen. Even our coach and managing team in the Academy asked me not to wear this number. Sometimes they told me they are not making jersy which don number thirteen,” smilingly.
He, with his two friends will have convocation this March and they will be coming home with a cheque in their hand by April or May. But from that on, they will never be a football students, who merely was a ‘small wonder’ but will be ‘a star’. May be a great star.

The first black man in the white house

I don’t know much about the Presidents of America. I have a book on the autobiography of some of the Presidents. I could only look back to the era of George Bush Sr., even the cowboy Reagan was not familiar with me because I’m too young. Every US President could make a speech but there is none for me ‘exceptional’ President regarding ‘mouth-thing’! But here comes my expected President – Barack Obama.

When I heard him speak for he first time in my life – I saw him live on TV – I could not tak my eyes and ears back before he stop. My wife told me ‘breakfast is ready’ when he start speaking, but I could not join her till the man in the black suit finished his speech. He could provide his listener just everything about anywhere!! I expect him to be a great world leader and a successful President of the USA. But some peple thought that he only possessed that kind of ability to charm hi supporters but lack experience in running government and do not have any military background, and questioned how this ‘well speaker’ would run the most powerful country in the world.

He’s now elected to become the ‘First Man’ in the Universe… We only have to wait.
